The Department
The Department of Botany is as old as the inception
of Sanatana Dharma College, Alappuzha in 1946. The department started functioning with intermediate and undergraduate classes.
In 1966, it was elevated to a postgraduate department with a batch of six students. Owing to an increase in the number of
educational aspirants over the years in this branch of science, the University has increased the total intake of students
periodically. In 1997, the University of Kerala recognized the department as a center for Doctoral Research in the field of
Botany. During the foregone years, the department could earn an outstanding reputation among the students and public through
eminent faculty, academic excellence and extension activities.
Objectives
- Teaching students at undergraduate and postgraduate level
- Research and development
- Transfer of knowledge through exhibitions, seminars and symposia at national and international levels
- Undertake consultancy services

Facilities
The department is housed in the main building of
the college with its lecture halls, department library, research laboratories and instrumentation room. The department has
a good herbarium and a botanical garden including a separate one for medicinal plants. Apart from the general library of the
college, there is a department library consisting of a good collection of books, standard journals and back volumes and an
extensive collection of reprints. There are ongoing research projects under various faculty members and have a good number
of publications.
